Welcome to Horseshoe Lake

Overview

Horseshoe Lake is one of the Mid-South's favorite lake escapes. This crescent-shaped oxbow lake sits in Crittenden County, Arkansas, near Hughes. Depending on where you start, it is roughly 30 to 45 minutes from Memphis. Bald cypress trees and lily pads line the shore. Docks reach into calm water, and the sunsets look out over Delta farmland. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission lists the lake at about 2,200 acres, with an average depth near 10 feet and a maximum depth around 30 feet.

History and Character

The lake was once a bend in the Mississippi River. Local histories say the 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes shifted the river's channel and left the old bend behind. Horseshoe Plantation, founded in 1919 by Memphian Robert Snowden, became a well-known gathering place. Its Snowden House was expanded in 1949 to a design by Memphis architect Everett R. Wood. Lake homes began appearing in the 1950s. Today's housing mixes classic lake cottages, remodeled getaways, and larger custom lakefront homes, many with private piers, boathouses, and lifts.

Lake levels are part of the story. A drainage and irrigation improvement district formed in 2007 helps manage the water level with deep wells and a canal system.

Lifestyle

Life at Horseshoe Lake centers on the water: fishing, boating, skiing, paddling, and long evenings on a screened porch. The lake is known for crappie and also holds bream and bass. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission maintains public access at the Nancy and Pat Bonds Access. Many owners use their homes as weekend retreats, while others live at the lake year-round and commute to Memphis.

Schools Nearby

The former Hughes School District merged into the West Memphis School District in 2015. Students in the Horseshoe Lake area are generally served by West Memphis schools.
