Overview

Harbor Town sits on Mud Island, across the Wolf River Harbor from Downtown Memphis. It offers riverfront living with a small-town feel, minutes from the city center. Shade trees line the sidewalks. History and Architecture

Developer Henry Turley, working with partners including Jack Belz, bought the site in 1987. Construction began in 1989, and the neighborhood was largely finished by 2004. The design team included RTKL Associates and Looney Ricks Kiss. They planned a dense, walkable community that put people ahead of cars: smaller lots, front porches, sidewalks, rear alleys and garages, and small-scale retail. Harbor Town is often cited as an early example of what became known as New Urbanism. It won a ULI Award for Excellence in 2005 and a Congress for the New Urbanism Charter Award in 2007.

Housing ranges from single-family homes to townhomes and condominiums. The homes draw on traditional Southern and historical forms with deep porches and generous windows. Purple martin houses, the neighborhood's signature, still dot the landscape.

Harbor Town residents walk to the neighborhood square, run or bike riverfront paths, and drive across the A.W. Willis Avenue Bridge to Downtown in minutes. The setting suits people who enjoy being outdoors and close to the river, with the city's restaurants, arenas, and events nearby.
