Overview

Memphis' Belle Meade, not to be confused with the Nashville city of the same name, is an established East Memphis neighborhood. It is generally bordered by Goodlett Street on the west, Walnut Grove Road on the north, Poplar Avenue on the south, and roughly East Cherry Circle on the east. Broad lawns, mature hardwoods, and traditional architecture give it a timeless feel in the center of East Memphis.

History and Architecture

The area around Goodlett, Poplar, and Walnut Grove grew in the 1920s and 1930s, when several prominent Memphis families built grand country homes there. Later, as those estates were subdivided, many lots filled with Colonial Revival and traditional homes in the decades after World War II. Today the streetscape mixes stately two-story traditionals, updated mid-century homes, and newer custom construction on desirable lots. In a fun bit of local lore, a house in Belle Meade served as the main home in the 1993 film The Firm.

Belle Meade is quietly convenient. Shopping, dining, medical offices, and the green spaces of Audubon Park are minutes away, yet the interior streets stay calm and leafy.
